Grandma’s Homestead
Hi, my name is Erica. I am fairly new to homesteading and learning so many things, good and bad, as I go. I bought an acreage for my 40th Birthday and jumped right in. I have a 5 year old energetic adorable granddaughter, and a 3 year old handsome active grandson. I want to learn along side them and teach them everything I learn about the wonderful and challenging life of homesteading. My son, now an adult himself, and I have always dreamed of living on a farm, and finally, here we are. I hoped to explore a “little bit of everything” before settling in on anything specific. As a single woman I wanted to start small so I started with a lot (64 to be exact) of day old chicks for both meat and eggs, added a couple pot belly pigs for fun and to help with tilling work when needed, then some turkeys and finally 2 bottle calves to raise for beef. I also planted a large garden with fruits and veggies. I later added three goats and a Jersey heifer calf to someday become a family milk cow. I then added 3 goats to start kidding and milking. Then when I thought that wasn’t enough, I added KuneKune pigs. That’s starting small, right!?! After 3 years of trying to figure everything out, I have decided that cows and chickens is what works best for me. Follow along with me and my grandkids as we explore, live, and are sure to make many mistakes we learn from.
